1. Arthritis goes way back

2. There are over 100 types of arthritis

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are over 100 types of arthritis. Most types cause pain and stiffness in and around the affected joints, while some others affect the immune system and internal body organs.

3. Arthritis is more common in older women than others

Many people know arthritis is more common in older adults, but studies show it’s more common in older women in particular.
The CDC determined in a study: “Overall, an estimated 22.7% (54.4 million) of adults had doctor-diagnosed arthritis, with significantly higher age-adjusted prevalence in women (23.5%) than in men (18.1%). Arthritis prevalence increased with age.”

4. Animals can develop arthritis

Yes, even little Fido can develop arthritis! Your pet’s joints can take a beating from the day-to-day fun of running after balls or jumping off furniture.
Take your pet in for regular check-ups to make sure their joints are happy and strong, and discuss treatment options with your veterinarian if your pet develops arthritis.

5. Exercise can help with arthritis

A CDC study showed significantly less prevalence of arthritis in those who met physical activity recommendations than those who reported no physical activity.
Follow these SMART exercise tips by the CDC:

  • Start slow, go slow
  • Modify activity when arthritis symptoms increase; try to stay active
  • Activities should be joint-friendly
  • Recognize safe places and ways to be active
  • Talk to a health professional or certified exercise specialist
