Medicare permitted temporary coverage of telehealth services during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Congress extended the allowance through Dec. 31, 2024. The Expanded Telehealth Access Act (H.R. 3875/S.2880) would permanently add audiologists, SLPs, and physical and occupational therapists as qualified telehealth providers under Medicare.

Two other bipartisan bills enacting permanent telehealth authority for audiologists and SLPs have been introduced in the House of Representatives. And two key House committees—Ways and Means, and Energy and Commerce—have approved legislation that would temporarily extend the telehealth authority through the end of 2026.

Because private insurers often adopt Medicare coverage and payment policies, congressional and regulatory changes to Medicare telehealth policy likely affect coverage for many patients and clients beyond Medicare beneficiaries.
